Would you Adam and Eve it – Nic Lyndhurst is Balkan royalty! He is mobbed by throngs of adoring fans every time he visits Montenegro, and is also popular in other countries in the region.
In fact, Only Fools & Horses is so popular in Montenegro that it is on TV every single day!
The legendary British actor – who played Rodney Trotter in OFAH – has made several visits to the country as a UNICEF ambassador.
Lyndhurst said: “When I first came in 2013 I got out of the car to go to a press conference, and as I walked down the road, people outside the restaurants and bars stood up and they all started to applaud. I felt like the Queen.”
The show has been extremely popular in the tiny Balkan state since it first aired in the 90s. The capital city – Podgorica – even has a pub called The Nag’s Head! The show is also a hit in neighbouring countries Bosnia, Serbia and Croatia, where it’s called Mucke – which means “shady job.” And fans often quote the comedy’s famous catchphrases like “Lovely jubbly” and “This time next year we’ll be millionaires.”
A clip of Rodney was once even used in a Serbian election campaign to brand a rival politician a “plonker”.
According to a local reporter: “The 1990s was a very hard time in the Balkan countries. We could see that Del Boy was someone like us, he was trying like us all the time to get money, buying and selling, and people related to him.”
