Only Fools and Horses is one of the most admired and iconic shows in British television history. It was even voted by the said country as the show they would most want to see make a return to their televisions. The most famous episode, which aired in 1996 saw over 24 million people tune in during the festive season.
Its hard to believe that 20 years have passed since the last episode aired. While a few specials popped up during the early 2000’s, nothing has transpired since then. That said, it would be interesting to see where the actors who made the show what it was are today.
Sir David Jason
One of the first characters that comes into mind when thinking about Only Fools and Horses is Derek ‘Del Boy’ Trotter, known off-set as Sir David Jason. The 76-year-old British actor played a major role in the crime drama A Touch of Frost starting in 1992 and carrying on for 18 years. He also starred in other television shows, including Open All Hours.
Sir David also released his own autobiography titled David Jason: My Life in 2013. The British actor was knighted for his services to drama in 2005.
The next actor on the list is known for his role as Gunner Nobby Clark in It Ain’t Half Hot Mum and Mike Fisher in Only Fools and Horses. Kenneth MacDonald unfortunately passed away after suffering a massive heart attack at 50 years of age in 2001. Prior to this he helped film scenes as Stephen Pearce in The Last Detective. His role was referenced during the Only Fools and Horses revival, where it was stated that the pub landlord was imprisoned for embezzling the brewery.
Harry Buster Merryfield
The late British actor only starred in one show, that being the role of Uncle Albert in Only Fools and Horses. He began working on set from 1985 after his character was introduced. After a brain tumour, he unfortunately passed away at 78 years of age.
The young Benjamin Smith assumed the role of Del Boy’s son in Only Fools and Horses from 2001 onwards. Prior to this, numerous other child actors took his place. His acting talents were noticed and as a result, he can be seen in multiple other television shows, including Doctor Who, Eastenders and Holby City to name a few. He has also starred in a few longer shows, such as Accused, Native and No Offence.
Paul’s claim to fame was his role as Horse in the blockbuster British film The Fully Monty. He also starred in Only Fools and Horses as Denzil. The 65-year-old continues to act to this day and has starred in numerous shows, including Casualty and Coronation.
Another iconic cast member of the British television show is Nicholas Lyndhurst, known for his role as Del Boy’s younger brother ‘Rodders.’ One of Lyndhurst most significant roles is that of Gary Sparrow in the once-popular television show Goodnight Sweetheart, which aired between 1993 and 1999. The British actor also starred in the prequel to Only Fools and Horses, known as Rock & Chips alongside James Buckley. He can also be found in the BBC crime drama, New Tricks.
Few faces are as recognizable as that of Patrick Murray’s. In Only Fools and Horses, he played the role of Rodney’s friend, Mickey Pearce. Unfortunately the now 60-year-old actor did face a few difficult years after the last episode of the afore-mentioned show aired. While the Millwalll Football Club supporter still acts, he has also turned to professional poker playing.
The stunning British actress is known for her role in Only Fools and Horses as Cassandra. In the show, she was Rodney’s love interest and in later episodes, his wife. She is also credited for her roles in other major productions, including The West End, A Touch of Frost and Midsomer Murders.
After a long absence from the set, she returned to television as Geraldine Clough in the British television show, Eastenders.
The prolific British actor played the role of the second hand car dealer named Aubrey Boyce in Only Fools and Horses. After the inception of the spin-off series Green Green Grass, he went on to play the same character from 2005 through 2009. He recently took the role of Captain Peacock in the revival of Are You Being Served. Challis has taken his fame as an opportunity to expand his portfolio and has published a pair of autobiographies and has even toured a one-man show titled Only Fools and Boycie.
Roger Lloyd-Pack was known for his role as road sweeper Colin ‘Trigger’ Ball. His likable character was famously known for always calling Rodney ‘Dave’ instead of his real name. Other roles that the British actor starred in include Owen Newitt in The Vicar of Dibley, Law & Order: UK and most notably Barty Crouch in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. After a slow battle with pancreatic cancer, Roger passed away at 69 years of age.
Up next is none other than Tessa Peake-Jones, otherwise known as Raquel. The prolific British actress has starred in numerous other hit shows, including Doctor Who, Holby City, Midsomer Murders, Doctors and a multitude of other productions. Even at 59 years of age, Tessa still does what she loves and plays Mrs Maguire on the ITV show Grantchester.
Next on the list is none other than Lennard Pearce, who was known for his role in Only Fools and Horses simply as Grandad. The afore-mentioned show was the only one Lennard starred in, but he did some work in on-stage in theatre during his career. The late actor passed away in 1984 at 69-years-old.
