How’s this for a nice little earner (and with no need for Terry to spill any claret on the pavement either)?
The wife of the late George Cole – who famously played wheeler dealer Arthur Daley in Minder – this week sold a number of the character’s famous items and personal effects at auction.
Daley’s iconic camel hair coat and trilby combo sold for a whopping £12,000, despite the pre-sale estimate being only £1200! There was tremendous interest in the items, with one British Minder fan clearly being happy to pay 10 times the estimate to secure them.
Daley’s black cashmere coat went for £5,400, his grey three-piece suit sold for £1,680, his blue blazer reached £1,320 and a collection of seven ties from the series were snapped up for £960.
The first Minder script, for the episode ‘Gun Fight at the OK Launderette’, which aired on October 29, 1979, reached a bid of £540.
Including fees, the total paid for the collection was over £27,000.
George Cole’s wife, Penny Morell, said of the auction: “There are people of a certain age who grew up watching Minder with their parents and to whom these items mean a great deal.
“The hat and coat had been kept in a wardrobe for several years and it was time for them to go to a good home and to someone who will enjoy them.
“I had quite a few requests from George’s fans, particularly fans of Minder, for items so it seemed to me a good idea to do this and for a fan to be able to say ‘I’ve got Arthur Daley’s suit or hat’.”
George Cole passed away in August 2015 following a short illness.
